Daphne Odjig : Harmony and the Universe

October 29 - November 16, 2022

Introduction to the Exhibition by Phillip Gevik:

Over the last forty years I’ve held many exhibitions devoted to the art of Daphne Odjig, culminating recently in a centenary exhibition of the artist’s birth in 2019.  Since that time, our world has been shaken in fundamental ways – we’re just now beginning to fully emerge from the worst global pandemic in one hundred years and there are days when the health of not only our people but our environment – our water, earth and sky – seem perilous.  This is why I invariably turn to Daphne – like all great artists, her vibrant energy and her faith in humanity, reflected in the dazzling colour and imagination of her paintings, have the ability to uplift and emotionally prepare us for whatever life is about to throw our way.

Harmony and the Universe (seen above) expresses the importance and beauty of trees and forests.  Daphne always used to say that trees could talk – she meant that they had their own spiritual voice, and deserved respect as living beings.  In this joyful painting, we see that thought exemplified in the spirits and dancers celebrating among the trees.  It’s such a hopeful image for troubled times.

It is an honour for me to present this exhibition of Daphne’s work and I very much look forward to sharing this exclusive selection of paintings and drawings with all of you.
