The Armenian Guitars
A Collection by Levon IchkhanianA heartfelt thank you and warm congratulations to Levon Ichkhanian for allowing us to share in the enthusiastic response to Monday night’s opening of The Armenian Guitars, an collection of guitars featuring Armenian motifs and designs, carefully curated over the last ten years. This special exhibition ran between June 11 – 15, 2024.
When Levon first approached me to mount this exhibition, I was initially a bit reticent given that I had never exhibited instruments before but music is just as important to the culture as the visual arts and it is important that we continue to promote their symbiosis, as one often influences the other.
I hope you were able to join us on Saturday June 15th at 3:30 pm to hear Levon discuss his inspirations and the cultural significance of this extraordinary collection. Following his talk, Levon briefly introduced us to the particular sound of his favourite piece.
Please enjoy the following photos from Monday evening’s festivities – Levon is so well respected in the music community and it was so wonderful to have so many people turn out to hear him perform and celebrate his passion for collecting:
As an Armenian, guitarist, oudist, and instrument designer, Levon Ichkhanian was inspired by the insightful words of Jose Ramirez III of the Ramirez Luthier Dynasty who, in his influential book Things About the Guitar, notes that, “The instrument [the oud] is not genuinely Arab; it emerged in the Christian Armenian communities in the first centuries A.C.” Not long after, Ichkhanian commissioned Luthier Khaled Al Halabi to custom build an oud with Armenian motifs and designs – an ‘Armenian oud.’ This experience further inspired Levon to create a comprehensive collection of guitars to add to the Armenian narrative, hence the title, ‘The Armenian Guitars.’ Ten years on, the collection is finally ready to be presented to the public for the first time. These guitars depict the Armenian narrative through paintings, etchings, engravings, inlays, and symbols, with motifs using gold, silver, amber, mother of pearl, and apricot wood from Armenia.
Levon Ichkhanian was born in Beirut Lebanon in 1964 into the world’s first diasporic Armenian family of musicians, which includes eleven Ichkhanian musicians over three generations.
