Brent Gelaude (b. 1956) - Artist Biography

Brent Gelaude (b. 1956) of Vancouver is known for working in wood, stone, clay and paint to create three-dimensional works that explore Indigenous arctic culture and the Canadian identity with humour, irony and natural beauty. Gelaude began his career in the early 1990s, working in the folk art tradition. Initially exhibiting at the Marion Scott Gallery in Vancouver, Gelaude helped revitalize the folk art tradition, handling his materials in such a way that betray a technically disciplined hand and a well-educated sensibility. His works tend to be both simple and complex in their craftsmanship and allusions. Many of his pieces recall pop-up illustrations and sometimes feel drawn from woodblock prints, demonstrating the artist’s unique sense of humor and his ability to create contemporary subjects with ancient or historical roots. Gelaude continued to be represented by the Douglas Udell Gallery in Calgary in the late 2000s.
