Catherine Perehudoff Fowler - Biography

Catherine Perehudoff Fowler is a renowned Canadian landscape painter inspired by the expanse of the Western prairie, the natural splendor of the wilderness, mountains, and lakes, and the romance of the Atlantic seashore. She was born into a well-known artistic family in 1958 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; her parents, Dorothy Knowles and William Perehudoff, are both painters, as is her older sister Rebecca Perehudoff. Catherine Perehudoff Fowler studied painting, weaving, and folk art at the Voss Folkschool in Norway (1976-1977), and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon (1977-1981). Since 1979, Perehudoff Fowler has also participated in artist workshops at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan, and has worked alongside such artists as Reta Cowley and Barbara Ballachey.

Catherine lived in the city of New York for a year and worked for artist Kenneth Noland at his South Salem studio. As a landscape painter, the surrounding scenery of upstate New York and Connecticut influenced her. During this time she developed an interest in the Hudson River school of landscape painters.

Art fairs where her landscape paintings have been or will be exhibited are: Architectural Digest Home Design Show, New York; ART Salzburg Contemporary & Antiques International; ART Innsbruck – International Art Fair; Artifact Gallery at Monaco Yacht Show, World Wide Art LA; Artexpo New York, Art Shopping at the Paris Carousel du Louvre; and Spectrum Miami.

Most recently she had a solo exhibition in 2019 at Adelinda Allegretti Studio&Gallery in Gualdo Tadino, Italy. In 2017 she had a solo show at Artifact Gallery in New York City. Her solo exhibition in 2014, was at Art Placement in Saskatoon, her home town. In 2010 she had a solo show at Gallery Gevik in Toronto, and in 2008, a two-person exhibit with Graham Fowler at the Gallery on Cork Street in London, England. Catherine Perehudoff Fowler lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and is married to artist Graham Fowler.

Artist Specialization: Perehudoff-Fowler's landscapes are alive with intimacy, capturing the prairie's vast expanses and immensity of the Rockies as a private experience for the viewer. A regular at the famous Emma Lake Workshops, Perehudoff has become a master at capturing the transient beauty of nature. From the open prairies and northern woods to quiet shores, she paints these scenes with soft yet densely applied brush strokes. "In her paintings of Saskatchewan, Catherine works principally with views of open prairies and the northern woods and lakes, subjects that first attracted the attention of artists beginning with the period of early exploration and settlement in the mid 19th. Century. By the late nineteen-seventies, a number of talented artists, including Catherine’s mother Dorothy Knowles and some time later Catherine and her sister Rebecca, began to establish a distinctive approach to western Canadian landscape that was no longer reliant upon conventions better suited to other circumstances. This approach was based upon a close, often intimate, reading of the prairie and Rocky Mountain environments, coupled with studies made from nature and the subsequent creation of relatively large works in the studio. In the process of this evolution, Catherine has developed a highly personal approach to her subjects that has brought her today to a position as one of the leading exponents of Canadian landscape painting." - Professor Keith Bell
