Jimmy John (1876-1978) was born in Friendly Cove, British Columbia and lived in Cedar near Nanaimo for half a century. A well-known and well-liked Nuu-chah-nulth artist who began carving in the early 20th century, he became Chief of the Yuquot and was a carver of totem poles, masks and silver jewelry. John died in Nanaimo in 1978. He was a direct descendant of Chief Maquinna.
