Artist Biography - (1961-2025)
Roy Kakegamic was widely recognized for his Eastern Woodlands artwork, and described himself as part of the second generation of Woodland artists. His work is grounded in the traditional stories and teachings generously shared by Knowledge Keepers from Sandy Lake. From early success in his twenties through decades of creative practice, his work reflected deep cultural knowledge and artistic excellence. His artwork is held in galleries across Canada and around the world.
Roy also served as Curator in Residence at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery in the early 1990's, where his presence and insight left a meaningful and enduring impact on us. Roy's work with the Gallery helped bring to fruition exhibitions that celebrated and recognized Woodland Style artists throughout Northern Ontario. Through his association with the Mizinatik Group, he created connections between these artists and our community. Roy also managed the Gallery's off site location in Victoriaville Mall, where he oversaw exhibited works from our permanent collection—bringing art from the Gallery into community.
His involvement in community outreach projects also brought art to young people through the Creighton Centre, bringing them to the Gallery for tours.
He is remembered for his generosity, warmth, sense of humour, and the lasting impact he made on us and his community.
