NEW TERRITORIES
Many of the first Indigenous artists to emerge on the Canadian art scene were Anishinaabe from Manitoulin Island and the surrounding area. For these artists, heavy form-lines surrounding thick swaths of vibrant colour depicting their history and cosmology were hallmark. The work of second and third generation artists such as Clifford Maracle, Bob Boyer, Glenna Matoush, Robert Houle, Joane-Cardinal Schubert, David Garneau, Brian Francis and Luke Parnell delve even deeper into political and metaphysical themes while experimenting in a wide variety of media. Their powerful expressions reflect the diversity of Canadian Indigenous regional, and cultural identities and their works are proudly represented in Gallery Gevik’s latest exhibition, New Territories, opening this Saturday, February 8, 2025.
